Wear something tried and tested on a first date
It’s tempting to buy something new for a first date, but wearing something you know works well means you’ll have one less thing to worry about.
So, you’ve got a hot first date coming up. Naturally, you’re thinking about a new outfit, new shoes, maybe even new underwear… but hold on a second, let’s not get carried away. Of course you want to look your absolute best, but here’s a first date tip that will also save you money: beware of the idea that buying impressive new clothes is going to make you more attractive to your suitor because, no matter how cleverly you assemble your new ensemble, there’s going to be a certain amount of first date discomfort – which means you’ll want your clothes to be as comfortable as possible. Plus, you don’t want to look as if you’re trying too hard, even though you do care about the outcome.
What’s more, with a new outfit, unless you’ve given it a few test-drives, you don’t know how it’s going to perform. Will it ride up? Does it breathe? Can you sit it in? Dance in it? Be yourself in it?
Relationship etiquette expert Mara Opperman says new clothes for first dates are just too risky. “You don’t know how that outfit will behave on you,” she says. “You haven’t yet ironed out all the potential mishaps of that outfit. There are so many things that can go wrong.”
So the sensible advice is, wear something you know works well and you’ll have one less thing to worry about in the pressure cooker of the first date. And try not to wear new shoes because those first few wears, especially with heels, are going to have trouble spots, and the last thing you want is not to be able to walk along the waterfront by moonlight or go dancing. So, by all means put your best foot forward – just not in a new shoe.
And while we’re not talking trakkies and Ugg boots, if you’re comfortable in your clothes, you’re more likely to be comfortable in your spirit which means your true character can shine through. And then, who knows where the second or third dates might lead?
