Where to go for an informal date in Sydney
If you’re a bit nervy on an early date, chances are you’ll want something that’s nice and unstructured, informal and low pressure to ease the stress. Here are some informal Sydney date ideas:
Laze in the Botanical Gardens
If you’re on your lunch break in the city, a simple date option is to grab your lunch and meet in the Botanical Gardens. You’ll feel reassured knowing that you’re on a time limit, so chill out and enjoy a chat in the sun.
Go [El] Loco!
If Surry Hills is convenient to you, this is a perfect venue to meet up at after a day in the office – their kitchen serves excellent Mexican with a slight Asian twist from Dan Hong, one of Sydney’s favourite chefs. Its cocktail menu is also a firm favourite, plus its proximity to Central station is handy for transport links.
Coffee in Leichhardt
Italian food in Leichhardt is about as close as you can to Italy without getting on a plane. Meet up for a quick coffee in the Forum and if things continue go well, you could catch a flick at the Norton Street Palace cinema, which always has something unusual showing.
Hit the beach
For some, the prospect of getting into your swimmers on an early date is a complete no-go. But if that doesn’t bother you, a beach date is the perfect informal meet-up. You can go for a paddle or read a book, have a chat and get an ice cream from the kiosk. Spots like Coogee, Redleaf, Shelly Beach and Bundeena are low-key, fun places to have a picnic and a relaxing time.
Brush up on your Thai
Sydney has a fabulous array of Thai restaurants, and Newtown’s King Street is an ideal location to get some of the city’s cheapest and best Thai food. You can’t help but feel informal while sitting on a slightly too hard chair in a tiny shop-front restaurant. Finish up with a drink in one of King Street’s brilliant beer gardens.
Check out Eveleigh Farmers’ Markets
The opening of Eveleigh markets a few years ago suddenly made the concept of local food and small food producers cool and accessible. Get an amazing coffee, wander around the tasting samples and do some people watching. Perfect for a laidback Saturday morning date (it closes at 1pm so don’t leave it too late).
Check out what’s on at the MCA
The Museum of Contemporary Art is a jewel in the harbour’s crown. With free entry, you can pop in on a whim and mull over the exhibitions in a low-key setting. Pop out for a wander around the harbour or the Rocks afterwards.
