Why it’s never too late to face your fears

by

What would you do if you had no fear? If you weren’t afraid, you could and would do ANYTHING that you wanted to do. Without fear, you would pursue that dream job, ask that person out on a date, go sky-diving, or take off on a global adventure! The possibilities are endless, but…there’s that little voice telling you – “It’s too late”, “I’m too old” or any other reasons that make it pointless now. Well guess what? Unless you are on your deathbed, it is not too late.

An ancient Chinese proverb states that “the best time to plant a tree was 100 years ago, the second best time is now.” Even though you would prefer to already have that university degree, or have trekked the Himalayas when you were younger and livelier, you cannot dwell on what could have been. It accomplishes nothing and will only get you down! Whatever roads and experiences we have already gained in life, it has made us the person we are today and we would not be the same person had we done things differently. Once you accept what you cannot change, you are then free to move forward with your life and realise that it’s never too late to ‘be what you could have been.’

We can all relate to Walter in ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’. He is an ordinary guy that lives out his uneventful life through fantasies in outrageous daydreams, which depict him as a courageous and exciting person. In reality, he has nothing to fill out in his eHarmony profile questionnaire when asked what he has done or where he has been. Sometimes we may feel as though we haven’t done anything worthy or been anywhere exciting. We have these fantasies of ourselves reaching our true potential, but our fears stop us from making them a reality. Aside from the common “it’s too late” fear, there are all kinds of fears, including lacking things – lack of confidence, physical fitness, knowledge and so on. But there are always steps we can take towards gaining these things, and we always have the CHOICE not to be held back by them. Embracing your fears won’t make them disappear, they will still be there telling you why you shouldn’t do this or that. Regardless, you must follow your path and that voice in your head will grow quieter and quieter.

When Walter finally faces his fears, he embarks on a global journey that turns his real life into an adventure more extraordinary than he could ever have imagined. So go on and dig out those long-forgotten dreams of yours that you put aside long ago. Think of those dreams that trigger the same passion that once got you excited and make a list. Go through them all and then ask yourself – are you ready to take the first steps to make it happen, or lose this dream forever?
