The Hungry Australian’s 5 Adelaide dates under $50
Let’s be honest: dating can be excruciating, especially in Adelaide where there is approximately one degree of separation between people. Chemistry is an elusive thing, too – someone might seem great on screen but not quite match up to your expectations in real life. And yet we must continue to hope and be brave enough to put ourselves out there because a life without love is a life half lived. So screw your courage to the sticking place and approach that person you’ve been secretly admiring from afar. I’ve listed five of my favourite awesome and creative date ideas under $50 in Adelaide below to speed you on your way. Good luck!
1. Weekend brunch
For first dates, I prefer weekend brunches to dinner because brunch is quicker and less loaded with expectation. If meeting in the city, try Abbots and Kinney for exquisitely crafted pastries, Hey Jupiter for quirky breakfast eats or Ding Hao (26 Gouger St, Adelaide) for steaming hot yum cha. Just outside of the city, Devour Cafe Patisserie in Richmond or Bar 9 on Glen Osmond Road are also great options: the food is top-notch, the servers are friendly and the dining rooms are spacious so you don’t have to worry about the people at the next table eavesdropping on you.
2. Mid week drinks
For people with busy schedules, after work drinks in the CBD is a great option. But not all bars are created equal and some may even hinder your romantic efforts. Conversely, bars with an interesting range of liquor, knowledgeable bartenders, stylish décor, intimate seating, sexy music and delicious bar snacks exponentially increase the chances of a successful date. My top bars in Adelaide for sophisticated grown-ups are Hain & Co, Proof, Clever Little Tailor and Udaberri. If the date goes well, all of these bars are within walking distance of some excellent restaurants, too.
3. Chocolate or Wine tour
For something different, why not try a chocolate or wine tour? Australia’s oldest chocolate manufacturer, Haigh’s, makes exquisite chocolates, truffles and marshmallows. A complimentary 20-minute tour of their factory and chocolate samples followed by the purchase of treats from the gift shop will put you and your date in an excellent mood. For wine lovers, the complimentary award-winning Wine Discovery Journey at the National Wine Centre examines the history of wine in Australia, winemaking, and the relationship between food and wine. Afterwards, sample wines at the Centre’s ‘Wined’ Bar & Cellar Door experience: Australia’s largest tasting room experience features 120 different wines from throughout the country to suit all tastes and budgets (from $2.50 per glass).
4. Weekend walk
For those that love the great outdoors, a walk followed by lunch is a lovely way to spend time with the object of your affections. Agree on what each person will bring and prepare picnic baskets with whatever deliciousness takes your fancy: perhaps some cheese, bread, dips, charcuterie and fruit? Go for a lazy stroll along the River Torrens and find a suitably scenic spot to enjoy your feast. Alternatively, for the fit and adventurous, a hike around Waterfall Gully offers a great workout along with stunning views. Bring your gear along in a backpack and don’t forget the water and sunscreen, either.
5. Adelaide hills day trip
A day trip to the Adelaide Hills is one of my favourite ways to spend time with someone special as it delivers plenty of opportunities for conversation and cuddling. Start the morning off with breakfast at Kitchen 2C or The Haus before exploring the wines at a cellar door like The Lane Vineyard, Shaw and Smith, Bird In Hand or Hahndorf Hill Winery. Alternatively, pick your own strawberries to take home at the Beerenberg Family Farm. Afterwards, stroll down the Hahndorf main street, hand in hand, browsing the gift shops, galleries and sweet stores as you go.
