Great about Perth’s 5 dates under $50

by

Forget dinner and a movie. To really impress your date in Perth, you’ve got to crank up the creativity and embrace your playful side. Get ready to earn some serious cred in the romance department…

1. For the hand-holders: ice-skating and market-browsing

Drive-in cinema, candlelit dinners, sunset walks – some date clichés are so corny they’re worth embracing. Ice-skating is one of them. Fremantle’s Winter Garden, Australia’s largest outdoor skating rink complete with falling snow, is running the month of July. Sure, you’ll both look a bit silly when you shakily take to the ice, but what could be cuter than those rosy cheeks and the sight of your mittened hands grasped tight? Best of all, the colder you get, the closer you’ll cuddle. Warm up afterwards with a stroll through the eclectic Fremantle Markets. Cosy up with a hot chocolate (and two straws) and spend some quality time people watching. Freo attracts all types – not just snow-dusted lovebirds.

2. For the players: 10-pin bowling and cocktails

Fact: there’s no footwear less sexy than a crusty pair of bowling shoes. But who cares? This is a date to let out your inner goofball and show that you don’t take yourself – or your outfit – too seriously.

Head to kitschy cool Rosemount Bowls in North Perth for a round of 10-pin bowling. Along with a chance to show off your adorable competitive streak, you’ll have ample time to check out your date’s form (we’re talking bowling technique, of course!) between turns. Afterwards, head to the leafy courtyard of nearby small bar, Old Laundry. Keep the date’s retro theme alive by ordering a round of Old Fashioneds or Martinis.

3. For the sweet teeth: dessert dego and a street art walk

Score some serious creativity points by taking your date for a four-course dessert degustation at The Trustee Bar & Bistro, one of the CBD’s best restaurants.

Savoury dinners are overrated, anyways! Ask for a cosy corner where you can savour every naughty mouthful away from the envious sideways glances of fellow diners. After “dinner”, make the most of your sugar high by exploring the street art in the nearby laneways. Start with Howard Lane, with its murals by Stormie Mills and the Yok before strolling a few blocks north to Grand Lane, home to a giant artwork by Bonsai and Twoone. Finish with a wander under Wolf Lane’s towering murals – if the date’s going well, then the handful of resident small bars provide the perfect excuse for a nightcap or two.

4. For the ocean lovers: breakfast and a beach stroll

Ok, so breakfast might not be the most classic date meal (blame it on the lack of alcohol and mood lighting) but with views and nosh as good as Bib & Tucker’s, it’s worth the exception. Grab a table on the North Fremantle restaurant’s sun-drenched balcony and order a stack of the fluffy buttermilk pancakes or the delish breakfast pizza (topped with bacon, eggs and buffalo mozzarella) and a Bloody Mary to quell the date jitters.

Follow it up with a barefoot stroll along the gorgeous Leighton beach, where you can gawk at the antics of the fearless kite surfers, laugh at the waterlogged dogs or simply bliss out with the sun on your cheeks and sand between your toes. Nope – long walks on the beach are definitely not overrated.

5. For the foodies: wine tasting and a picnic

Jump in the car (or better yet, borrow a mate’s convertible) for a daytime date the Swan Valley. Boasting the oldest vines in the state, the region might be best-known for its wine but there a plenty of other things worth tasting, including olives, cheese, honey, chocolate and coffee. Make sure to leave room for a picnic lunch on the lush lawn of Mandoon Estate, one of the Swan Valley’s most highly awarded wineries.

If you haven’t collected a meal’s worth of provisions already, then hit up the on-site deli and garden bar for Mandoon’s estate-made wine and beer. Then kick back, tuck in and enjoy the sprawling vineyard views as you while away the afternoon.
