10 Essential dating tips

by

1. Be yourself

Don’t try to be someone you’re not in an attempt to impress a potential date. Everyone has their own strengths and talents; identify yours and use them to your advantage. Maybe you’re a great cook, play an instrument, or give great advice to your friends and family – whatever your unique qualities, dial them up and you’ll naturally attract matches who share your values and interests.

2. Get interesting

If you’re feeling bored with your daily routine, it’s time to change things up. Do something you’ve never done before – start a new hobby, join a class or travel somewhere new. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money either, there are plenty of free activities you can get involved in to break up your routine. Explore new things you’ve always been interested in but never actually tried; there’s nothing more appealing than a passion for life.

3. Check your body language

90% of all communication is non-verbal, so watch your body language while on a date. Crossed arms or legs can give a standoffish or guarded impression, while fidgeting can signal nervousness or anxiety. Make sure you use body language that shows you’re engaged and interested in the person. This includes smiling, using hand gestures and plenty of eye contact.

4. Try online dating

Are you still sending messages via carrier pigeon to woo lovers, or maybe just unsure about online dating?  Nowadays, many people use online dating to meet people outside of their social circle. In fact, there are over 2.9 million Australians registered on eharmony alone! There are plenty of dating sites in Australia that will help you start your new dating adventure.

Online dating allows you to exchange instant messages and search for love interests based on compatibility and variables such as age, interests and values. It’s free to sign up, a lot of fun, and a great way to meet new people.

5. Show a real interest

When browsing someone’s profile, don’t speed read it and write a generic response. If you’re interested in someone, take the time to read their online profile carefully and write a considered and thoughtful response that’s related to something they’ve mentioned, like a hobby or interest. Similar backgrounds or same interests are often a good conversation starter. You’re more likely to get a positive reply if you put in the effort.

6. Put your best face forward

People are drawn to profile pictures that tell a story, or that show something about the person. Plain head shots, group photos or selfies are all fine to include in your photos, but try to put your best self forward when it comes to your profile photo.

7. Be open to love

If you’ve been hurt before or, for whatever reason, are in an unhappy place, you might be reluctant to go out and meet new people. While it’s important to have ‘me time’ and learn to love yourself first, love only happens when you’re ready and willing to accept it.

8. Make an effort with your appearance

You don’t need to spend excessively on a new outfit or hair style to impress a date. But you should spend time making sure you look groomed and well presented. If you look good on the outside, you’ll feel great on the inside and confident during the date.

9. Be creative

In the film Amelie, two shy strangers find innovative and sweet ways to communicate with each other. They leave romantic notes on the subway until they have the courage to speak face to face. You don’t have to go to these lengths, but creativity with romantic gestures wins people over.

10. Be interested in the other person

While it’s important to talk about yourself and highlight your positives, don’t just brag about your achievements and possessions. Make sure you ask plenty of questions, listen and be genuinely interested in what your date has to say.
