Scott Eastwood on love, life and The Longest Ride

Scott Eastwood plays a cowboy with traditional values, a tonne of charm, and a bit of a stubborn streak in ‘The Longest Ride’. He gives an outstanding performance in the movie (based on the book by Nicholas Sparks), which explores the many ups and downs of relationships. We chatted with the 29-year-old about a few related topics.

eharmony: Before making this movie, were you a fan of romantic films and Nicholas Sparks?

Scott Eastwood: I’d obviously seen ‘The Notebook’, which I liked a lot, and I know Nicholas Sparks is a very prolific and successful writer, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that I gravitate towards romance movies or books. I just like good stories, and if that story happens to be a “romance,” then so be it.

eharmony: Sacrifice and compromise play a major role in both narratives of the film. How much do you think one should sacrifice for a relationship?

SE: Split the deck, it should be two handed. And I think it depends on how much you care about someone. If you’re not doing the necessary things to accommodate someone, or be conscientious about them, maybe that’s a sign you don’t care about them as much as you think. I just think if you really love and care about somebody, you’ll figure out a way to make it work.

eharmony: Luke and Sophia come from such different worlds. What do you think it is about opposites that attract each other?

SE: The mystery of the unknown and the unfamiliar can be very appealing.

eharmony: Do you believe there is one person out there for everyone?

SE: Yes, I do. There’s something like 7 billion people in this world, so if you look hard enough, and long enough, I think everyone can find someone.

eharmony: What do you think are the ingredients that make for a successful long-term relationship?

SE: Respect. Hard work. Communication. Good sex.

eharmony: What advice would you give someone who really wants to find love but has so far been unsuccessful?

SE: Just like anything in life, you keep at it. Don’t get discouraged. Stay positive. Whatever you do, try not to come across as desperate, because that’s the kiss of death right there.

eharmonyDo you have a personal mantra or anything that gives you an esteem boost when you need it?

SE: Life is all about perspective, so no matter what you’re going through, there’s always someone who’s got it worse.

eharmony: What do you love most about your life today?

SE: I’m lucky because I’m passionate about what I do, and as you get older, you realise there aren’t a lot of people who can say that, so I’m one of the lucky ones in that regard. I have great friends and family in my life.
