Top summer date ideas
Go to the movies
You could either relish in the aircon of your local cinema with a choc top or head to one of the outdoor cinemas here just for summer. Whether it’s the iconic St George Open Air Cinema at Sydney’s Mrs Macquarie’s Chair or Moonlight Cinema across Australia, you’ll get a flick, but also an epic night under the stars.
Go for a milkshake
Milkshakes have come a long way from chocolate sauce and milk in a tall glass. Why not meet up for a Tella Ball Shake (nutella in a glass with a doughnut on top!) from Sydney’s Foodcraft Espresso, or a Dulce De Leche from Einstein’s Relative in Melbourne or the Hershey’s Love Child (Reece’s peanut butter cups, Hershey’s chocolate sauce and Oreo cookies) from Longboards in Surfers Paradise. Sure beats a coffee on a 35 degree day.
Take a trip to the beach up a notch with a snorkel mask and fins. Spotting groupers, coral, snapper or stingrays will give you something to talk about over fish and chips on the beach after.
Visit a farmers’ market
Summer is market season – the stalls are overflowing with fresh produce and the good weather and good coffee means you can spend an entire morning wandering, sampling and listening to live music. We love Eumundi Markets in Queensland, Carriageworks Farmers’ Markets in Sydney and Golden Plains Farmers Market in Victoria.
Have a picnic
Pack some Champagne, cheese, Lavosh crackers, Maggie Beer quince paste and some fruit, lay out a picnic rug under a shady tree and wile away an afternoon. Check out some of our favourite picnic spots in Perth, as well as tips for creating the ultimate romantic picnic for two from our friends at Pop-Up Picnics.
Find hidden waterfalls
A walk is a great date idea – it’s relaxing yet active, and doesn’t involve the same conversation pressure as it can be easier to chat when walking side by side than when you’re staring directly in their face at a restaurant table! Google bushwalks in your area and filter to find ones with waterholes and waterfalls – the perfect spot to cool off with a dip after hiking to it!
Take a craft beer tour
Wine tours are awesome in winter but in summer it’s all about quenching your thirst with a cool, refreshing beer. Don’t bother driving, hop on a craft beer tour to visit breweries and learn how they make hops and barley taste so good.
Complete a half day course
Learning something new together will bond you in a way a drink at a bar can never do. A half day course in drawing, cooking or, if you’re both up for it, dance!
A hit of adrenaline and a sense of accomplishment when you master a catch will make this a date anything but boring.
Head to a gig
James Bay, Rob Thomas and Grimes are all touring nationally; or check out your local to discover – and support – up and coming talent.
Go to the cricket
Even if you don’t understand what a bump ball or donkey drop is, you can still enjoy the atmosphere at the cricket. If a whole day game is too long, try a twenty20 game, which is over in about three hours!
