Belinda’s dating journey Part 1
You may remember recent internet sensation Belinda Stuckey as “the woman who has been on more than 130 dates in two years – but never a second date.” We got in touch with her to find out the real story, and discovered she’s actually a very positive (and very relatable) 35-year-old Aussie single lady. She’s been speaking with eharmony Dating & Relationship expert Melanie Schilling about her experiences, and will be sharing her dating journey with us over the next few weeks.
I am a 35-year-old single, independent, professional female. I enjoy being single, but the older I get, the more challenging it becomes with every dating experience that passes by. I am going to share my experiences, my inspirations and learnings that relate to my single life over the next month.
I am at a stage where I have lived my single life to such complete fulfilment that I am now ready for the next phase. I have travelled the world, engaged in a career, partied, holidayed in the sun, and had lots of fun….now I would love to do all of this with someone significant.
Following a relationship, I have been single for about five years and actively dated men for the last three years. During this time I’ve realised it’s important to take time out for yourself. Get to know who you are, what you want from life and re-evaluate your options after a long-term relationship. I took a good two years to do this and once I was comfortable with who I was again, I decided to embark on the dating journey.
Realising my social circle was now full of married or coupled up people with children, I signed up to various online dating sites in hope of meeting someone special. Plus I am not a fan of the pub or club scene anymore (I don’t like alcohol) and I work in a female dominated industry working unconventional hours. So it makes it very difficult to meet men.
Over the course of these past three years or so, I have dated myself to virtual death. I am now one of Australia’s most contacted members on eharmony. To be honest, I am quite overwhelmed and confused. If I am so popular, then why am I still single? Oh, and my favourite question that I am constantly asked, “How is it possible that a girl like you is single?” If I knew the answer, do you think I would still be here? Haha.
Some of the reasons why I think I’m single is because men seem to either be very selective, emotionally damaged or unlikely to respond to messages unless I fit the exact image they have in their head of Miss Supermodel. I’m not bitter, I’m just confused by these men who say they want to find love, but their actions don’t coincide with this and in fact prevent them from discovering it.
So after many failed attempts at finding that significant other, I found myself thinking: Is there something wrong with me? Am I doing something wrong? Why is it that I have not found someone when there are so many people who have? After all that I have been through, I am struggling to still believe that there is that ‘one’ out there for me. Also, the next time I meet someone with real potential, how can I enter into it without believing it will end in disappointment like it has every other time?
I have been lucky enough to have been put in contact with eharmony’s Dating & Relationship expert Melanie Schilling who is an internationally accredited dating coach, psychologist, author and speaker. After speaking to Mel and feeling pleased and positive with our discussion, I am excited to embark on the 30 day DATEready program along with my eharmony membership. Its aim is to help individuals date strategically and to get us the relationship we deserve. Over the next few weeks, I will be blogging about my experiences and thoughts throughout this journey. I hope you’ll enjoy my series and relate to my experiences.
