Rob and Karen

Central Coast, NSW

In the beginning…

Karen and Rob were matched on eHarmony in May 2006, and had both signed up within two weeks of each other.

When they were matched Karen’s profile caught Rob’s eye and he decided to send her an email via eHarmony. Karen responded quite positively even though she said Rob wasn’t the kind of guy she would usually go for. They emailed each other for around four weeks. This was enough time for Rob to change Karen’s mind so she decided to give him a call. The connection they felt when talking on the phone was strong, which was a surprise for Karen as she was recently divorced and had two teenage children. She never thought she would find someone so quickly after her divorce. Karen was keen to take it slow, and Rob was aware of this, but after a week or two of talking on the phone they decided to meet up casually on a weekend.

The first date…

Karen and Rob’s first meeting was full of excitement and nerves. They met in the carpark of the Gosford swimming pool. Rob is a bit of a joker and before they had met face to face, he had often said that for all Karen knew, he could have been an axe murderer. So the first thing Rob did after meeting up, to prove he wasn’t, was to show her the boot of his car. As he opened the boot they both peered in and, to her relief there was no axe. That seemed to break the ice!

Their first date went for 9 hours and they managed to fit a lot in! First they went for a coffee in Terrigal, and then went to a local lookout where they talked for hours. They finished the date off with a meal at the local club then coffee at Karen’s house. It was an amazing 9 hours and was the start of something very special.

As the months passed, their discussions started to focus on their future together. From, the engagement, to the rings and then the wedding plans. After they chose the wedding and engagement rings, Rob started thinking about how to propose to Karen.

The proposal…

On New Years Eve 2006, Karen and Rob were staying in Newcastle and decided to go to the New Years fireworks at Swansea. Rob had the ring stashed in his pocket and a bottle of nice champagne. So, with loads of nervous energy, Rob sat next to Karen on the rocks overlooking the water as they waited for the fireworks to commence. When the clock struck midnight and the fireworks began, Rob got Karen's attention. He shared with her how amazing he thought their last 6 months together had been, and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Rob reached into his pocket to pull out the ring, he presented it to her and asked if she would marry him. Even though they had discussed marriage and picked rings, Karen was surprised and excited and yelled ‘yes!’ It was a magical setting with the fireworks lighting up the sky around them, and they will both remember the proposal forever.

The wedding…

Karen and Rob’s wedding was exactly one year and one week after they first met. The ceremony took place at a local church and everything was set to go, the bridesmaids looked glamorous, and the groomsmen looked dashing in their outfits. Karen and Rob, however, were a bundle of nerves! As soon as Rob saw Karen walking down the aisle he became emotional, he thought she looked amazingly beautiful! As they read their vows they felt lighter than air and couldn’t take their eyes off each other.

After the ceremony they headed to the reception, which was held at the local Surf Club. There were views overlooking the beach and ocean, and the room was decorated spectacularly. The celebrations went late into the night.

They spent their honeymoon on a week long cruise from Cairns to Cooktown. The cruise was great and was just what they needed after many months of crazy wedding planning.
