Michelle: “I had just about given up on dating when I met Andrew in July 2011. In fact, Andrew was the LAST guy I was going to give a chance before taking a break. Lucky I did because he swept me off my feet! We knew that it was something special. We were exclusive within about a week, and within the first month, a devastating incident brought us closer together and changed our lives forever.

I had done other online dating websites before but they never felt right. It was more based on looks, and for me there’s more to finding one’s life partner. So, I decided to take the eHarmony online survey and give it a go. I felt secure and excited about what eHarmony matches I would get as I felt it did a lot of the ‘weeding’ through for me.

After going on a couple of unsuccessful dates, I approached Andrew. He wasn’t someone who I probably would have chatted up at a party or a pub, he’s shy. I could tell that something was different about his profile, so I started communication. He was consistent with his replies and prompt with his responses during our guided communication, which was really important to me.

After two weeks, Andrew made the 1.5 hour drive to see me. I was working a demanding job and going to school full-time to finish my Masters, I really wasn’t very excited about our first date at all. I had gone on enough first dates to know how exhausting it can be to ‘start over’ again with someone new. But Andrew was different. He was also really nervous. He was sweet, quiet but strong. We chatted for over two hours, met up again that night for drinks, and then again the following day for an afternoon date. We talked every day and made every attempt to see each other, to make the most of his visit. I knew he was someone I loved after about three weeks.

After having a weekend together I got a text message from him saying "please call". My heart sank, I thought that he was having second thoughts and was going to end it. I called him, and when he picked up the phone I could tell that he was upset. In that moment our relationship changed - at the age of thirty, his best friend had died of a sudden heart attack.

We then made some huge life decisions around careers, namely me turning down job offers to be closer to him. I got a job, met his family and we made a commitment to blend our lives together. Andrew and I travelled back to America to visit my family in September 2012 and he was an instant hit. Well, how couldn't a 6'5" Aussie not be a hit, especially after he made pavlova for my family? They loved him, and I knew then that he was the one I wanted to be with.

Andrew worked with a jeweller in my hometown to design a custom engagement ring. He proposed to me in March 2013 in front of my closest friends, at Sugarloaf Rock - a rock formation on the coastline near Cape Naturaliste in Western Australia. He organised a surprise proposal for not only me, but for my friends as well. We're getting married in a small beach ceremony in WA in November 2013, and then a ceremony in June 2014 in Oregon.

Thanks, eHarmony for my life partner!”
